Maintenance of handmade carpet
Several factors cause damage to the texture of the carpet. including direct light radiation, excessive decrease or increase in temperature, atmospheric pollution, microorganisms such as fungus and mold, vermin, or improper storage methods and conditions
Among the damaging factors, willow is one of the important pests that causes a lot of damage to carpets.
Methods of combating willow to maintain handwoven carpets
With all the dangers that willow poses to carpets, it is completely possible and easy to combat it. Willow has been known since ancient times, and in every era there have been methods to fight it. But it has not been applied in an industrial way and on a large scale, such as cooling using natural materials. In Iran and some parts of the world, it is customary to roll or fold carpets and place naphthalene or camphor pellets in between them so that the vapors emitted from these substances make the environment unsuitable for this insect, which is of course a relatively old method, but It is valuable and useful.
There are four main ways to fight willow:
1- Toxic fumes
In this method, toxic vapors are used, which are fatal for larvae. Of course, in addition to the larva itself, the willow is also destroyed, but the willow egg remains, so the use of this method is not permanent. The materials used in this method should not be dangerous for humans, such as hydrogen cyanide, which is harmful to humans and should not be used.
Today, naphthalene is used, which increases its gas concentration due to its low boiling point in a closed environment, so it is a cheap and convenient method in a closed space such as inside a suitcase containing woolen clothes.
2- Prevention of willow damage by cooling method
In this method, woolen goods are kept in the cold, for example, in England and America, this method is used to preserve the skin of fur. In this method, the willow is not destroyed, but goes to sleep and starts its activity when it gets warm. All that can be done is to kill the larvae by successive freezing and freezing.
3-Poisoning willow through contact with poison
In this method, the substance used causes poisoning and destruction of willow and larvae. Like Dedt poison, which is a derivative of diphenylmethane, a cheap substance that is used to disinfect clothes and carpets. It is forbidden to use it because it is non-degradable, and chlorophenyl chloromethyl sulfur can be used instead. The materials used in this method sit on the surface of the fibers and are separated from the product over time or are lost due to washing.
4-Using drugs that are of two types
A- Degrading the product (making the product inedible)
The chemical structure of the carpet and clothing is keratin, that is, there are disulfide bonds between the chains, which the larva breaks and then eats and digests the protein chains. Now, if these bonds are broken and re-bonded with compounds such as formaldehyde, due to the change in the type of bond, the larva is unable to break the bond and the wool is not edible for the larva.
B- Poisoning the larvae by eating poisoned goods
In this method, the wool is poisoned and contaminated, and if the carpet wool is eaten by the larvae, the larvae will die. These materials are absorbed by the wool of clothes and carpets and have washing stability, which means they do not disappear by washing clothes. Among the features that these materials must have are:
1- It does not have an adverse effect on the physical properties of fibers such as strength and...
2- They should not be colored, because they cause stains on the carpet.
3- Chemically, they should not have a bad effect on the color stability of the carpet.
4- Do not cause allergy or poisoning for humans.
5- Their price should be reasonable.
Anti-pilling of wool after weaving a hand-woven carpet
At this stage, the carpet is washed with a suitable chemical solution at a certain temperature that is listed in the drug brochure, and then the carpet is placed in water-retaining devices to drain the water, and as is customary in traditional Iranian carpet cleaning, The water is removed with special shovels and this process is repeated several times until the piles of the carpet completely absorb the chemical solution, and after this they avoid washing the carpet and dry it as it is.
